How to Write a Professional CV on Your Phone in Kenya (2026 Guide)

You've found the job. The deadline is tomorrow. And your CV is a Word file from 2022 sitting on a laptop you no longer have.
Sound familiar? This guide is for you. It covers what Kenyan employers expect to see, the mistakes that get CVs ignored, and how to make a clean, professional CV in a few minutes, using only your phone.
Why the first few seconds matter
Recruiters skim. A widely cited eye-tracking study by the job site Ladders found recruiters spend about 7 seconds on a first scan of a CV. In Kenya, where one job advert can pull in hundreds of applications, it's often less.
So your CV has one job: make the important things easy to find, fast.
What Kenyan employers expect to see
Keep it in this order:
- Contact details. Full name, phone number, a professional email (firstname.lastname@... not sweetboy254@...), and your town.
- Professional profile. Three or four lines on who you are, what you're good at and what you're looking for. Write it for this job.
- Work experience. Newest first. For each role: job title, employer, dates, and 2–4 bullet points that start with action words (managed, sold, trained, reduced). Use numbers wherever you can: "served 60+ customers a day" beats "served customers".
- Education. Highest level first. Include KCSE only if it's your highest qualification or the advert asks for it.
- Skills. The skills that match the advert: computer packages, languages (English, Kiswahili, others), driving licence, and so on.
- Referees. Most Kenyan employers expect 2–3 referees with name, title, organisation and phone number. Ask them first!
Common mistakes that get CVs ignored
- Sharing personal details nobody asked for. Leave out your ID number, marital status, religion and date of birth unless the advert specifically asks.
- Adding a photo when one isn't requested.
- Making it too long. Two pages is plenty for most people. Fresh graduates can usually fit everything on one.
- Typos. One spelling mistake can undo a strong CV. Read it out loud before you send it.
- Writing a generic "objective". "Seeking a challenging position in a reputable organisation" tells the reader nothing. Say what you bring.
- Sending the same CV to every job. Small tweaks to your profile and skills for each advert make a real difference.
No laptop? No problem
Most Kenyans job-hunt from their phones, but formatting a CV in a phone word processor is painful, and a trip to the cyber café costs money and time.
That's why we built the CV builder on Ark Node AI. You answer simple questions about yourself, and AI turns your answers into a properly formatted, professional CV you can download as a PDF.
Step by step: making your CV on Ark Node AI
- Open the CV builder: arknode.ai/services/cyber-cafe/cv_gen. There's no app to download and no account to create. Your wallet is set up automatically.
- Chat with it like a person. The builder asks about you, one question at a time: your name and the role you want, then your experience, education, skills and referees. Rough answers are fine; the AI tidies up the wording. The conversation is free.
- Choose a template. Once it has enough, pick one of three designs: Corporate (single column, conservative), Modern (two columns with a dark sidebar) or Minimal (clean and centred).
- Generate and download your PDF. You pay only at this step: 100 sats, about KES 10. If your wallet is empty, top up with M-Pesa first (the minimum is KES 10, so one top-up covers it).
Tip: paste the job advert into the chat and tell the builder which role you're applying for, so your profile and skills match what the employer asked for.
Add a cover letter for each job
Many adverts ask for a cover letter, and even when they don't, a short, specific one helps you stand out. On Ark Node AI, a tailored cover letter costs 30 sats, about KES 3. Paste in the job advert and your details, and you'll get a letter written for that exact role.
Your checklist before you hit send
- Name and phone number correct (call yourself to check!)
- Professional email address
- Profile written for this job
- Experience newest first, with numbers where possible
- No ID number, photo or unrequested personal details
- Two pages or fewer
- Referees have agreed to be contacted
- Saved as a PDF named properly:
Jane_Wanjiku_CV.pdf, notcv final final 2.pdf - Read out loud once for typos
Good luck. You've got this.
A good CV won't get you the job on its own, but a bad one can stop you being considered. Spend ten minutes getting it right.
